Mitsubishi i-MiEV

This is an electric version of Mitsubishi’s i-city car and now the standard petrol engine of this vehicle is unavailable in the UK. However, the electric version is here and ready to be driven by environmentally conscious motorists but how does it compare to its rivals?

Design & Interior

The i-MiEV was one of the first electric cars to go on sale in the UK and while it has a reasonable amount of interior space, it is much smaller than the Nissan Leaf. This is hardly surprising since it is a city car and is designed for use in narrow streets. The silent electric motor would allow you to creep along almost unnoticed if it wasn’t for the standout design of the vehicle.

The i-MiEV has a high roofline so there is lots of room inside for passengers in the front and back of the vehicle. You will only be able to fit two people in the back seat so be wary of this if you are seeking a 5-seater model. The 227 litre boot is far from being spacious but it should be large enough for most people’s needs.


The combustion engine and fuel tank of the i-city car have been replaced by a 200kg battery pack and electric motor with 63bhp. The i-MiEV excels when it comes to the stop-start nature of city driving as it pulls away nice and smoothly and handles well. While it is not suited for rural use, it is fun to use on a short jaunt into the countryside as it is capable of keeping up with traffic.

The range is said to be in the 80-100 mile arena but this depends on how you drive. For example, the range will be dramatically reduced if you have the air-conditioning on at full power. The i-MiEV charges in 7 hours from a mains supply but this decreases to 30 minutes if you possess a 50kW three-phase supply.


The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is one of the better four-seater city cars on the market that produce zero emissions. Its low centre of gravity allows for good body control and it performs extremely well in high traffic situations. On the downside, it is expensive for what you get and the Nissan Leaf offers more power for a slightly higher price.
